Overview

Go beyond four wheels and discover the many modes of exploring Tanzania's great outdoors. This eight-day tour is built for adventurous travellers who prefer a dose of adrenaline with their exploration. Canoe-safari through Momella Lake and spot hippos, giraffes, and water birds in their natural habitats, and hike into (and out of) an extinct volcanic crater. Of course, you'll have two days to explore the Serengeti in a 4x4, leaving your hands free for photo ops along the way (because it wouldn't be a trip to Tanzania without the safari photos to prove it).

Itinerary

Day 1Arusha
Arrive at any time. There are no planned activities until an evening welcome meeting.
Day 2Arusha NP
Head into Arusha NP and explore Momella Lake by canoe. Spot wildlife on the waters edge as they come to drink. After lunch, continue exploring the park on a wildlife safari drive.
Day 3Arusha/Mto wa Mbu
Travel to Mto wa Mbu village and take part in a cultural walk to learn about village life in the area. Meet the women who run the village tours and enjoy a delicious home made traditional lunch.
Day 4Empakaai Crater
Ascend the rift valley escarpment into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and get ready for a beautiful hike into the extinct Empakaai Crater. At the end of the day, enjoy the view from the campsite over Ngorongoro.
Day 5Ngorongoro/Serengeti National Park
Enter the Serengeti NP and spend the day on a wildlife safari drive in search of the "big five", while taking in the vastness of the Serengeti plains. Drive through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and on to Serengeti National Park. En route marvel at the sheer vastness of this territory, and spot the multitude of animal and birdlife while cruising through this acacia-accented savanna.
Day 6Serengeti National Park/Ngorongoro
Opt for a balloon safari in the morning, or continue on with another wildlife safari drive. The rest of the day will be spent in the Serengeti, finishing the day with sunset on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. Enjoy another day of wildlife safari drives to see the animal kingdom come to life in this incredible expanse of grassland savanna. After, journey to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, famous for Africa's best wildlife viewing. The vistas from the Ngorongoro Crater rim are stunning, and there is an ever-present abundance of animals, due to the permanent water supply on the crater floor. Arrive at the campsite on the crater rim in the evening.
Day 7Ngorongoro/Lake Manyara
Head out early for a wildlife safari drive in the Ngorongoro Crater, then enjoy an afternoon biking in Lake Manyara NP - home to the famous tree climbing lions. Embark on a early morning crater drive. The rich pasture and permanent water of the Crater floor supports a resident population of more than 20,000 to 25,000 large mammals.
Day 8Mto wa Mbu/Arusha
Visit the G Adventures supported Clean Cookstove Project, then head back to Arusha, where the tour ends on arrival. Onward flights can be booked from 7pm, or extend your stay in Arusha by a night, or two.

What to Take

You will be on the move a lot, so our advice is to pack as lightly as possible. Your baggage should be clearly labelled and restricted to one soft compact suitcase, sports bag, or backpack, no larger than 30cm(height) x 30cm(width) x 60cm(length), maximum 15kg, plus a daypack. Luggage limits on airlines are strictly enforced, and due to limited vehicle capacity, the cost of transporting any luggage beyond these restrictions is the responsibility of the client. Please note, if you are travelling with a large amount of luggage and wish to leave a portion of it at the start hotel, this is indeed possible as storage facilities are available. For our camping style tours you will need to provide your own sleeping bag, small pillow and sleeping sheet (if you would like). We provide the tent and the sleeping pads. It is important to pack clothes for warm days and cool evenings, as well as a warm jacket for early morning wildlife safari drives. Light, quick-drying, practical clothes are advisable for this safari trip.
