Durmitor National Park

  • The spectacular, and dramatic Durmitor National Park is one of Montenegro’s showpieces.
  • The massif is located in northwestern Montenegro, and it is part of the Dinaric Alps. 
  • Carved out by glaciers and underground waters, Durmitor stuns with dizzying canyons, sparkling glacial lakes, and nearly 50 limestone peaks towering to over 2000m.
  • The highest peak is Bobotov Kuk, which hits 2523m. From December to March, Durmitor is a major ski resort, while in summer, it’s famous for hiking, biking, and other active pursuits.

Difficulty

  • Skill level required: Intermediate
  • Fitness level required: Fit
  • No special equipment is needed for this trip (usual mountaineering equipment), there are no special requirements regarding health condition.
  • Of course, only healthy travelers may undertake this journey, namely the travelers who are allowed to take on an increased activity.
  • We will ascend to about 2500m above the sea level and there will be from 4 to 8 hours of walking daily.

Itinerary

Day 1 Meet and drive to Zabljak

Meet in Slovenia, drive to Zabljak via Croatia and Bosnia 

Day 2-Day 5Climb and explore Durmitor National Par
  • Durmitor National Park is located in the Northwest of the country, and Prokletije in the South, and both are renowned throughout the country for their excellent outdoor activity conditions, both in Winter and Summer.
  • We meet on the first day in Slovenia, where we hit the road and drive down to Montenegro through Croatia and Bosnia. Zabljak is our starting point, the highest town in the Balkans, and our main base for the subsequent 3 days of exploring Durmitor National Park.
  • We will be ascending a different 2000m + peak every day we are in Durmitor National Park, each with different characteristics and terrain, and we will also be visiting the mesmerizing. 
Day 6- day9Climb and explore Prokletije National Park
  • We then head to the Proklejite National Park on day 6, a massive expanse that reaches the Albanian border, and much like in Durmitor, every day will be devoted to ascending a 2000m+ peak, including one day where we cross the border and climb one in Albania.
  • The scenery is equally as spectacular here as in Durmitor, with the rolling green hills and peaceful lakes making for an epic view.


Day 10Drive back to Slovenia

The10th and and last day is spent driving back to Slovenia via a refreshing swiming the Adriatic Sea, hopefully having given you memories to last a lifetime and inspired you to know more about the underrated gem that is Montenegro.
