Itinerary

Day 1Arrival – pickup in Queenstown, ride to Dingleburn Cattle yards

3 hours gentle riding

You will be picked up in Queenstown early in the morning to meet the horses at the Dingleburn Cattle yard’s.

We enjoy a picnic lunch whilst we get to know one another, our horses and sort out baggage requirements. Horses will be saddled and waiting for your adventure to begin.

Once we have finished lunch, we saddle up and ride into the beautiful Dingleburn station. You will be amazed at the pioneering Kiwi ingenuity that constructed this access way into such a stunning and remote station. We will pass the waterfall that provides the hydro power for the station. This is a wonderful picturesque gentle days riding to begin our adventure. Keep the camera handy.

Our accommodation for the evening is the Dingleburn shearers quarters, located in an amazing setting. Here we have hot showers flushing toilets, electricity from the station generator and a wonderful cookhouse where we will enjoy a farm cooked meal and relaxing evening.

Day 26 hours gentle riding

Tummies full of breakfast, tucker boxes packed we head out from the Dingleburn station. We will spend the day feeling as though we are riding in a postcard as the views throughout this ride are breath-taking. Crossing the crystal clear Dingle River we are looking straight into the Hunter Valley with imposing mountains flanking our trail. The Hawea Lake is aquamarine and out to our left is the Hunter Valley station track that we will be riding tomorrow. We will stop along the way for photo opportunities.

Our accommodation for the evening is the Boundary Hut which has a long drop toilet, 10 bunks in two separate bunkrooms, solar lighting and a wonderful horse paddock with stables and tack room. The hut enjoys spectacular views of the Hunter Valley and delightful sense of isolation. Most of our riders love a swim in the Hunter River this evening and we have a hot shower available with our camp trailer.

We will enjoy nibbles and dinner on the expansive decking enjoying a mountain backdrop. There is an opportunity to sleep out under the stars tonight if you so wish. Tents can also be erected if you so desire.

This is one of New Zealand’s best fly fishing rivers, those fly fisher people amongst us may wish to spend the day out on the river. Bring your license and fishing rods if you want an evening’s fishing

Day 36 hours gentle riding

Packing our saddle bags after a lovely home cooked breakfast, we say goodbye to the Boundary Hut as we head for our destination for the evening Hunter Valley accommodation.

Today we ride through native Beech forests and water falls. Travelling alongside this imposingly beautiful lake side, on a still day the mountains are reflected in the aquamarine waters which takes your breath away. We meander through old fishing cribs that have been here for many years, an indication of the wonderful fishing available in the rivers and streams that service the lake. We will see Hereford cattle and merino sheep roaming free. The native birdlife fills the trees and keen eyes may spot wild deer or native falcons.

Our accommodation this evening is the beautiful Hunter Valley quarters. These quarters enjoy hot showers, flushing toilets, TV room and electricity with comfy beds. The deck looks out of the picturesque Hawea Lake and old rustic farm buildings.

There are some nice walks around the lake if you so desire after dinner or you could just enjoy a wine sitting on the deck soaking up the view. There is an opportunity to chat to those who live and work on Hunter Valley station and many times we are lucky enough to see the dogs working in the yard with the sheep.
