TripAdvisor Traveler Rating

Why with us?

We operate the original tour of Lord of the Rings (LOTR) New Zealand, providing the most comprehensive tours available.

Established in 2002, our constant refinement means we now offer the very best of both The Lord of the Rings and New Zealand in one compelling package.

Here are 7 reasons why you should let us take you on an adventure through Middle-earth.

1. Make Life-Long Friends

Be part of a fellowship from the moment you arrive until the time you leave. Our small groups allow you to easily mix with like-minded people and form friendships that last a lifetime.

2. Discover Exclusive Movie Locations

We will take you off the beaten track to locations closed to the public, where you will experience not only awe-inspiring scenery and sets but also meet some of those who were involved in making the films.

3. Passionate Guides

Your tour will be led by our passionate guide, giving you access to their in-depth knowledge of all things LOTR  and New Zealand.

Our staff make meaningful and lasting friendships with their groups through shared interests and traveling NZ together.

4. The Original and the Best!

As the longest established The Lord of the Rings tour operator in Middle-earth, we have built connections and relationships over many years to create the optimal experience for you.

We constantly refine our tours based on our guides and tour members’ feedback.

5. 100% Authentic

Red Carpet Tours was born out of genuine interest and passion for Tolkien and LOTR. We put the fans first and provide depth of knowledge and detail that will be beyond your expectations.

We like to get as ‘behind the scenes' as possible - imparting interesting and little known facts, personal interactions with people involved in the production and a chance to bring the scenes to life by acting out a chosen part. This is no “theme-park” experience!

6. Amazing Testimonials

Check out our faultless feedback on Trip Advisor and Rankers.co.nz and you will see what we mean!

7. A Life-Changing Pilgrimage

Many of our customers comment on the life-changing, awe-inspiring nature of the tour in its entirety.

The personal and almost sacred aspect of your own personal journey, quest or pilgrimage - has different levels of significance and meaning for each person.

Our Promise to You

“From the moment you arrive in Middle-earth, we will strive to exceed your expectations.

We will take you off the beaten track, to remote locations, the very best sets and scenes, and impart our in-depth knowledge about both The Lord of the Rings and New Zealand, creating an inspiring experience you won’t forget. Your journey with Red Carpet Tours will be an adventure of a lifetime!”

Depart as Friends

  • Passionate and knowledgeable, our team is here to make your dream of visiting Middle-earth a reality.
  • Join one of our The Lord of the Rings (LOTR) Tours and let us lead you in the footsteps of your favourite Hobbits through the lush green fields of the Shire, to gaze upon the shorelines of unspoiled lakes surrounded by snow-capped peaks, and to epic battle grounds, in an experience so compelling you will almost hear the distant thud of hooves and swords clashing.
  • You will start your New Zealand tour with strangers, and depart as friends, bound by the memories from an adventure of a lifetime on a journey exploring the length and breadth of the country that has become Middle-earth.

Weather

  • Pack for All Seasons
  • Keep in mind that New Zealand is the opposite season of the U.S. So if it is summer here, it is winter there.
  • However, in New Zealand, you can get a feel for all four seasons in one day.
  • The weather there changes often. It can be cold in the morning and evenings, have spring-like rain by mid-morning and feel scorching hot by afternoon.
  • Therefore, you need to pack for all of the seasons, regardless of what season you are planning to travel in.
  • Bring Rain Gear: It rains a lot in New Zealand. If you are planning on doing outdoor activities, you may want to bring along some rain gear.
  • A lightweight rain jacket or packable poncho can keep you dry until the rains pass, which can increase your comfort level.

About us

  • Red Carpet Tours is a family owned company with Kiwi guides who are passionate LOTR fans themselves.
  • We provide a depth of knowledge and detail that will go beyond your expectations. In this 6 day Tour you will get to visit Hobbiton, enjoy a pint in The Green Dragon Pub and climb over volcanic rocks at Mordor!
  • You will spend time with the Artist and map maker of all six films and experience exclusive behind the scenes tours at the famous Weta Workshop.
  • You will get a taste of the best parts of Middle-earth. The whole time you will be submerged in breath-taking New Zealand scenery with lush green forests, volcanic slopes, sparkling blue lakes and native wild life.
  • That, coupled with a fellowship of like-minded fans you will be sharing this tour with, will draw you into a group dynamic that is welcoming, lively and inclusive.
  • Its time to go on an Adventure!

FAQ

  • What is New Zealand like?
  • New Zealand can be a long way to travel for most people, so why is it so many tourists make the trip and even return here to live??
  • Well, New Zealand is unlike many other places on Earth. It has a small population, stunning scenery and no predators!
  • We have more sheep than people here but the 4.5 million people that are here are friendly and laid-back.
  • People from New Zealand are known as ‘Kiwi’s’ after our beloved native flightless bird, the Kiwi.
  • New Zealand embraces its native Maori culture as well as many other cultures from around the world due to the huge influx of tourists returning here to live; bringing with them a vast range of cultures and traditions.
  • Its landscapes and scenery are breath-taking to say the least and the food is delicious -especially our signature coffee’s such as the 'Flat White'.
  • After all, New Zealand is a dairy country and one of the world’s largest milk producers.
  • The climate and land have been ideal for this multi Billion-dollar industry to flourish.
  • What sort of accommodation do the tours have?
  • We stay in 4 Star Hotels in most cities / towns and some very nice lodges and Inn's in country areas.
  • The accommodation is comfortable, and in many cases the same accommodation that the cast and crew used.
  • "I got Elijah's room! That's right, I spent the night in Elijah Wood's bed…For six weeks Elijah slept in the bed that I am currently in. I mean, the entire crew, well, lived here." - Josh's Tour Diary
