What's the origin of the Soca river?

Soca is the main river of the Triglav National Park. The 138 km-long alpine river starts its journey at the valley of Trenta, near Vrsic.

On the Bovec-Vršič road, turn left at the 49th hairpin bend in the direction of the road to Vršič. A marked trail leads from the Cabin to the Source of the Soča River and will take you to the source in 15 minutes. The trail is maintained but very demanding in the upper part, protected with wedges and wire ropes. You will need suitable footwear and adequate physical condition. The source of the Soča River is one of the spots on the popular Soca Trail.  Source

Adventure lovers continuously seek to find rivers, streams, waterfalls, pools, and lakes. Most of the mountain trails go to the peak, or to a water attraction. This is the same with Triglav National Park in Slovenia and its most famous alpine river: Soca.

You will agree if I say that hiking in the European Alps is a great getaway for everyone, full of jaw-dropping moments. What if I suggest you take a hike along with one of the Alpine streams? You won't hesitate to do so, right?

Why Soca is unique?

Soca (which is an Alpine stream) is more diverse than all other inland waters. It can change its character and appearance. Once you step through its tiny stream, an hour later you find yourself next to it again as a lake or waterfall. You are guessing if it's still the Soca river or not. Something is exciting about the beauty of its diversification.

Even mountain streams take it easy sometimes. Where the geography of the land permits, they form beautiful lakes. The water here is often the most precise and cleanest because the streams have not traveled far yet and have not picked up much dirt and pollution.

But their life isn't always that easy. Sometimes they have to find a new way of transforming themselves into other streams or waterfalls.

Also, don't forget that without these vivid streams, there wouldn't be forest or woodland creatures to fill the Alps with life (here, you will find the Julian Alps).

As spring comes, things start to move again… Green is beginning to show again, and life is coming back. The rising temperature provides the streams with plenty of water input. They are fed by meltwater from all sides, and now it's clear why they are called white water.

Around April, Soca gathers its full size back. From this point, water sports enthusiasts come to Triglav National Park to try out new ways of fun each day.

Water Activities and Programs

Soca is one of the most diversified rivers in Triglav National Park. Due to its varied landscape, you can try out any day activity of your choice. Thanks to Soca, Triglav Park is the country's number one destination for families, friends, and couples.

Most local tourism providers are centralized in Bovec, the heart of Triglav National Park. From here, providers take you to the best-suited part of the Soca river.

In total, you can try several beginner-friendly half-day activities. These are kayaking, rafting, canyoning, SUP, hiking, biking, ziplining, caving, paragliding, mountaineering, and rock climbing.
