Slovenia is famous for its pristine nature, fairy tale-looking places, emerald rivers, impressive waterfalls, and beautiful mountains. Did you know that there are more than 300 waterfalls in Slovenia? Although many are hidden in the forests or mountains, most can be reached by a small hike.

It's hard to choose the most beautiful waterfall in the country - since there are so many. So we made a list of 8 waterfalls worth visiting during your Slovenian trip. Pick the ones you like the most and start exploring!

#1 Pericnik Waterfall

Pericnik waterfall is one of the highest Slovenian waterfalls at 52 meters. It’s located in the Vrata Valley. Both the waterfalls and the surroundings are amazingly beautiful. The most fun about it is that you can walk behind the waterfall! The route is quite easy, so it’s worth the hike.

There is a second, smaller waterfall as well, with 16 meters. Once you reach the lower one, you can continue your walk to the higher waterfall. This second climb is a bit harder, but the views are breathtaking from the top.

The water is dripping from the walls of the waterfall, which is great if you would like to cool down a bit during summer. If your mind getting a little wet, don’t forget to pack a raincoat before your trip. And be very careful on the wet rock, since they can get very slippery.

The Pericnik waterfalls are also beautiful during winter. The waterfall freezes, and you get to see a unique sight you will never forget.

Getting there

Drive through Mojstrana village and follow the signs to Vrata Valley. The first parking spots cost 3 Euros, but if you drive a little further, there are some free parking spots. You can reach the lower waterfall in about 10-15 minutes from the parking lot.

#2 Kozjak waterfall

The mysterious Kozjak waterfall with its emerald pool is hidden at the end of a canyon in a stony chamber. According to many, this is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Slovenia.

Even the trail that leads you to this hidden gem is spectacular. The footpath leads through a forest, follows the crystal clear Soca River, and crosses cute wooden bridges.

At the end of your walk, you will reach a half-cave dome with a green pool and a white beam of water. The route is easy and suitable for families as well. Even though bathing is not allowed to preserve the beauty and nature of the pool, the Kozjak waterfall is still an amazing spot to visit during summer.

How to get to Kozjak Waterfall?

The waterfall is located near Kobarid, in the direction of Dreznica village. Follow the turning for Napoleon's bridge over the Soca River. You'll find the parking lot on your right in front of Kamp Koren. You can reach the waterfall on foot, the walk takes about 30 minutes.

4 € for adults, 2 € for children (from 7 to 17 years old), and 3 € for students, seniors, and groups of 10 people. Open all year round.

#3 Boka Waterfall

Boka Waterfall is one of the most popular waterfalls in Slovenia. The overall height of the waterfall is 144 meters. During spring and after some heavy rains, the view of the flow is astonishing. The magnificent waterfall is well visible from the road, you really can't miss it.

If you take a closer look at the waterfall, you can follow a well-marked trail to the viewpoint. A steep and rocky path, but it only takes about 15 minutes to get to the first viewing platform.

However, unless you are looking for a challenge, you can skip the viewpoint and just admire the waterfall from the parking lots. After that, take a walk on the riverside of Soca or Boka or hike in the beautiful surroundings.

If you are an experienced hiker, you can get to the top of the waterfall if you follow the trail after the viewpoint. It takes about 45 minutes to get to the top. The path gets very steep, and the small rocks under your feet aren't helping either. Once you are at the top, the view is breathtaking, so if you decide to take the road, you will not be disappointed.

How to get to Boka Waterfall?

Drive on road 203 from Bovec to Kobarid. You can leave your car at the parking lot near Hotel Boka or drive a bit further until you reach the path's starting point to the viewpoint. During summertime, the parking lots get crowded, so arrive earlier to ensure your spot.

#4 Savica Waterfall

If you plan a vacation in Triglav National Park, Lake Bohinj, or Bled, you should add Savica Waterfall to your Slovenia itinerary. The water appears from an underground river in the middle of a rock and flows into a beautiful emerald green pool. The contrast of the rocks, the two arms of the white waterfall, and the clear green pool make the place extremely photogenic.

To get to the waterfall, you have to climb around 550 stairs. It sounds a lot, but the hike isn't bad and only takes about 20 minutes. At the top you'll also have a great view of Lake Bohinj - so don't forget to turn around.

The waterfall's viewpoint is quite small and gets crowded easily during summer - because it's close to many popular places. So again, try to visit the place early in the morning to avoid the crowds.

How to get to Savica waterfall?

By bike or foot from Lake Bohinj. From Camp Zlatorog, it's about an hour's walk to the parking lot under Savica Waterfall. From June till August, you can take a bus to the waterfall. Check out the timetable here.

You can leave your car in the parking lot near the Savica hut if you travel by car. The parking fee is 4€.

The price for adults is 3€, for students and seniors 2,5€ and kids from 7 up to 14 years is 1,5€.

Open all year round, if the weather conditions allow it. The passage is at your risk if the trail is not cleared.

#5 Sum Waterfall

The Sum waterfall is part of the Vintgar Gorge near Lake Bled. The entry ticket is not cheap, but you'll see it's worth every penny. For 1,6 km, you will follow the Radovna River on wooden bridges and narrow passages.

During your walk, you can admire the unbelievable colours of the gorge and multiple smaller waterfalls. At the end of the trail, you can find a small cafe. From there, take the stairs down to the Sum Waterfall.

The visit will take you 1,5-2 hours to return. This is a very popular attraction during summer and especially at weekends so that it can get crowded. This can take a lot from the experience, so visiting the Vintgar Gorge on weekdays at opening times is best.

How to get to Sum Waterfall?

The Vintgar Gorge is only a short drive from Bled. Alternatively, you can take a shuttle bus from Bled, which costs 1 €.

Fee and opening time

A visit to the Vintgar Gorge costs 10 € for adults, 6 € for students and 3€ for kids. The parking fee is 5€ at the location. You can visit the Gorge between April and November.

#6 Rinka Waterfall

The 105-meters-high Rinka Waterfall is located near the Austrian border in the beautiful Logar valley. It's the highest single and unbroken waterfall in Slovenia and was proclaimed a natural monument.

The waterfall is quite different from the other Slovenian waterfalls - a long straight beam with no emerald green pool and orange rocks in the background. The waterfall alone wouldn't be an amazing sight, but with the road through the Logar Valley, it's worth a visit.

How to get to Rinka Waterfall?

The waterfall is at the very end of Logar Valley. From the parking lot at the end of the asphalt road, you can reach the waterfall is about a 15-20 minutes walk.

Opening hours and prices

The waterfall is free, but you'll have to pay an admission fee if you travel with a motor vehicle. It costs 7€ for cars and 5€ for motorcycles. To avoid the fee, you can leave your car at the entrance and walk or change to bikes (but remember that the waterfall is about 2 hours on foot from the entrance). The other option is to arrive before opening hours.

#7 Susec Waterfall

The Susec Waterfall is one of the lesser-known waterfalls in Ilirska Bistrica, in Slovenia - though it's equally impressive as the others mentioned. It is unique because the water only flows during certain periods of the year.

The word Susec means dry in Slovene - so now it's pretty obvious why the waterfall got this name. You have the best chance to see the water flow in its glory in spring or autumn after heavy rainfall. And if you also like to avoid the crowds, this trip is definitely for you.

How to get to the Susec Waterfall?

Ilirska Bistrica is only a half-hour drive from Postojna and Skocjan. So after you visit one of the caves, you can stop here for a little walk. You can reach the waterfall from the city centre in about 10 minutes. Just follow the signs for Slap Sušec.

You can visit the waterfall for free. Note that the waterfall can dry during summer, so it's best to visit in spring, autumn, or after heavy rains.

#8 Virje Waterfall

Virje Waterfall is one of the most magical waterfalls in Slovenia. It's perfect for relaxation, photography, or a romantic walk. The multi-stranded waterfall flows through a cliff cowered in moss with different shades of green.

Combined with the pretty pools and the magical forest, this place again looks like it is straight out of a fairy tale. The waterfall's source is the Glijun stream, one of the rare karstic springs that never dry up.

How to get to Virje Waterfall?

The waterfall is located near Bovec. You can leave your car in Plužna village and follow the marked road to Virje. Before the bridge over the Glijun stream, a wide path turns left and downwards. You'll hear the waterfall getting louder and louder as you walk, so you'll find it easily.
